According to Walk Thru the Bible, the book of Hebrews “is about going spiritually from milk to meat—to grow and mature spiritually. The author of Hebrews seeks to dissuade Hebrew Christians from reverting to Judaism as a way to avoid persecution for their new faith in Christ. He demonstrates how Christ is superior to all parts of their old religion. To be persecuted for Christ is better than returning to an empty religion. He warns them against turning back, and exhorts them to move even further ahead, going from milk to meet in their quest for godliness. The deep message of this letter is for the church in every age.”
And we don’t want to miss that deep message nor do we want to misunderstand it. To that end, Dr. George Guthrie joins the podcast to to help us unpack this dense letter. Dr. Guthrie currently serves as Professor of New Testament at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia. On his personal website, Dr. Guthrie confesses that his goal is to, quote, “help you and me grow in our ability to understand, love, and live the Bible.” Well, I’d say a hearty amen to that aspiration and it’s one of the many reasons I’m excited to speak with him now.
